Guys here are some things that may be keeping you from seducing the woman you meet.
You may not understand Morse code, but you can read the messages she's sending out. Winking. Laughing. Touching your arm. The tension between you is thicker than Jerry Springer's skull, and there's no doubt in your mind that tonight, luck is a lady. But just two hours later, there you are; staring into your refrigerator, speculating on the safety of that leftover Thai food and wondering why she called it a night. What happened? Maybe you committed one of these common dating mistakes.
You go from flirtatious to salacious. She sent you the signal, and you responded with a term that would make Larry Flynt blush. "There's a fine line between sexy talk and coarse language, but when you cross it, you kill any chance you had," says Susan Segrest, features editor of New Woman magazine, who conducted an informal poll of women to determine the most common "deal-breakers" --stuff guys do that ruins a sure thing. "You should follow her lead when you flirt, and lay off the offensive stuff."
You play all your cards.
Maybe it's not your crude words but your hard sell. "Guys who
exert too much pressure end up shooting themselves in the foot," says
Segrest. "Women think you're conning them." For example:
*Saying "we're so much alike" on the first or second
date
Asking her very personal questions
*Taking her to expensive restaurants and insisting on paying
*Spending lots of money on baubles for her when you've barely dated
*Asking her to go away with you this weekend
*Asking her to shave your back during cocktails
Wait until after the third or fourth date before springing that kind of
stuff on her.
You tell her about your last failed relationship. Save it for your therapist or your bartender. By laying out a pathetic personal life before a prospective partner, you paint yourself as a needy little twerp. "You give the impression that you're the kind of guy who has to be taken care of," says Bader. "And your lack of confidence will most likely turn her off." So enough about you. Ask about her. Women like men who are interested in what they have to say. And say. And say. And say.
You show off your expertise. You like her so much you want to wow her with your impressive knowledge of 12th-century hygiene practices. Shut up. "Give only a moderate amount of information when talking to a woman you're getting to know." says Bader. "You'll sound less self-centered and confident enough to admit you don't know everything." So it won't hurt to confess ignorance once in a while.
