2.  Compliment the competition.  Let's say you and Maurice have eyes for Tina.  Your first impulse might be to try to convince Tina what a huge dope Maurice is.  But do that and you send Tina a cue that Maurice must be worthy competition if you have to bash him.  Instead, pay Maurice a compliment.  A backhanded one.  It's a subtle way to demonstrate his inferior status, says David M. Buss, Ph.D., University of Michigan professor of psychology.

unconcerned with appearances.".................................He's a slob.

3.  Get a fake date.  If you know a great-looking female friend, by all means show her off.  "There are few things more attractive to a woman than the fact that other women are attracted to you." says Buss.  In one study, when people were asked to judge men based on photographs of them with "spouses" of differing attractiveness, unattractive men paired with good-looking women were routinely rated most favorably in terms of status.

4.  Analyze her romance quotient.  One study suggests that a gaze, when aimed at the right woman, can do wonders.  Researchers found that highly romantic women are vulnerable to long, thoughtful gazes.  Unromantic lasses, though, don't budge.  So the key is to measure a woman's romantic quotient quickly.
     Early on, bring up a recent romantic flick.  Then broaden the topic to love in general.  Ask her about her definition of love, whether or not love conquers all or if love at first sight really exists.  (Researchers used these questions to define romantic.) If her answers drip like a Harlequin romance, let the gazing begin.  If she comes off cold, then tell her how much you hated Sleepless in Seattle.

5. If all else fails, move.  Consider Washington, D.C. an option.  In cities like our nation's capital, where women far outnumber eligible men, women will often shift to casual sexual encounters to compete for partners.
     Or take Sweden, for example.  Because the Swedes provide day care for children, long paid maternity leaves, and many other benefits, women are less financially dependent upon men.  With less incentive to marry, maintaining one's virtue prior to marriage becomes less important.  Women, thus, are less choosy about their sex partners.  And we didn't even mention the meatballs!
