  You're probably very used to judging women by their appearance. Surprise! They're doing the exact same thing to you.

  We're guessing you've read all the same studies we have. Women like tall men with big eyes, strong jaws, no baby fat in their faces, long eyelashes, expressive mouths -- the list goes on. But don't panic: There are plenty of guys out there who don't look like Orland Bloom but are still doing all right for themselves. You can't grow taller, but there's lots you can do to make yourself more attractive to the opposite sex.

It's important to remember that what we consider attractive is not just a matter of personal preference, but is in large part determined by fashion and the culture in which we were raised. In ancient Japan, young women dyed their teeth black to indicate that they'd come of age ( and perhaps to prevent tooth decay), and young men across Europe practiced swordplay, hoping to receive a scar or two to impress the chicks.

  If you had to characterize the looks of the current times in one word, that word would be health. When you're in prime form, taking care of yourself, eating right, getting plenty of exercise (as well as plenty of rest), you not only project self-confidence, but you'll be what she wants: On an elemental level, women respond more positively to a healthy male.

For instance, Balmain points out that the Kama Sutra takes into account the fact that "sex is intimate, and impeccable grooming is a courtesy that can't be overlooked." The book is specific, down to man-dating that you use cologne to smell nice, but don't wear too much -- sound familiar? "You need to be clean, well-shaven, otherwise well-groomed, and well-dressed. You did then, and you do now," says Balmain. And a ring on your finger doesn't get you off the hook. Don't you dare complain that she's let herself go unless you're willing to go the extra mile yourself.

  We think it's time that American men learned what women have always known: that someone who looks like they'd be good to touch gets touched more often. Perhaps that's why male grooming salons like John Allan's are popping up all over the United States.

In Europe, it's been a trend forever. The first men's-only spa and grooming salon in the United States, Nickel, is actually a French transplant. In many cultures, including Russia, Hungary, Japan, and the Netherlands, it's derigueur to go and get really, really clean at a public bathhouse. Many-- from the Japanese onsen to the Russian banyas to the Finnish saunas to the Hungarian thermal baths to Korean mogyoktangs and jjimjilbang -- offer either grooming services or a place to do it yourself.

  But when we think of bespoke tailoring, valets, and the kind of shave that results in a stiff upper lip, we think of the British, so that's where we went for advice -- specifically, to Ray Khandpur at London's number one male grooming salon, Jason Shankey Male Grooming, who says, "Girls are getting sick of men looking a mess, but men are afraid of a place that will go too far." Grooming salons, specifically targeted to men often have a clubby, masculine feeling to them and specialize in making men look better without making them look perfect.
